Every fluid in your car, and where it goes

Rotate the car and tap a numbered dot. Each one explains what that part needs and lists the matching oils, fluids, greases and batteries available from Al Kazna and Lubesouq.

The eight service points, explained

The same guide as the 3D view, laid out for reading. Grades are typical for passenger cars; the owner's manual always has the final say.

1

Engine

Petrol engine oil

Engine oil is the one fluid every driver changes. It cools the pistons, carries away combustion deposits and keeps the valvetrain from wearing under heat. Modern petrol engines call for a full synthetic in a low viscosity grade; older engines and hot climates lean towards 10W-40 or 20W-50.

Spec: SAE 5W-30 / 5W-40 / 10W-40 — API SN or SP. Match the grade in your owner's manual.

2

Radiator & cooling

Engine coolant

Coolant carries heat from the block to the radiator and stops the system corroding from the inside. In UAE summers the inhibitor package matters more than freeze protection, so use a ready-mixed 50/50 or dilute a concentrate with distilled water, and never mix inhibitor chemistries.

Spec: Ready-mixed 50/50 or concentrate — ethylene glycol with OAT or hybrid inhibitors.

3

Brakes

Brake fluid

Brake fluid transfers pedal pressure to the calipers and must not boil under hard braking. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point, so it is replaced on a schedule rather than when it looks dirty — every two years is the usual interval.

Spec: DOT 4 for most modern cars; DOT 3 where the manual specifies it.

4

Gearbox

Transmission fluid

The gearbox lives on its own oil. Automatics and many modern manuals use an automatic transmission fluid whose friction characteristics are part of the mechanism, so the fluid has to match the maker's specification. Conventional manual boxes take a GL-4 gear oil.

Spec: ATF Dexron III for automatics; SAE 75W-90 / 80W-90 GL-4 for manual gearboxes.

5

Power steering

Hydraulic steering fluid

Hydraulic power steering runs on a small reservoir of fluid that lubricates the pump and rack. Most systems specify an ATF, and a low or aged fluid is the usual cause of a whining pump and heavy steering at parking speeds.

Spec: ATF Dexron III unless the manual calls for a dedicated PSF.

6

Rear differential

Axle gear oil

The differential splits drive between the rear wheels through hypoid gears that slide as much as they roll. That contact needs a GL-5 extreme-pressure gear oil; a lighter oil will let the crown wheel and pinion wear. Limited-slip units need an LS-rated fluid.

Spec: SAE 80W-90 or 85W-140, API GL-5.

7

Wheel bearings & chassis

Multipurpose grease

Wheel bearings, ball joints, driveshaft splines and door hinges are greased rather than oiled because grease stays where it is put. An NLGI 2 lithium or lithium-complex EP grease covers almost every chassis point on a passenger car and resists water washout.

Spec: NLGI 2 lithium EP grease; lithium complex for high-temperature hubs.

8

Battery

12V starter battery

Heat, not cold, is what kills batteries in the Gulf: high under-bonnet temperatures dry out the electrolyte and shorten life to two or three summers. Sealed maintenance-free batteries with the right cold-cranking amps for the engine size are the standard replacement.

Spec: 12V sealed maintenance-free (SMF/CMF); match the group size and CCA in your manual.
